Abu Isḥāq al-Ilbīrī al-Tujībī (d. 459 AH / 1067 CE) is said to have written this poem in response to a young man who had insulted him. Instead of replying in kind, which was the custom of poets, he decided to respond by providing the young man advice that would benefit him in this life and the next. This poem is so filled with gems of wisdom and invaluable advice for the reader, that scholars of Islam have instructed their students to memorize it for centuries. This translation of al-Ilbīrī’s work is presented along with the original Arabic for the benefit of Arabic learners and enthusiasts who would like to enjoy the beauty of the elegant Arabic composition and style. A true gem when it comes to Islamic poetry.
